The Artist

William Spencer Bagdatopoulos (1888 – 1965) was a Greek born painter, known particularly for his works in the Orientalist style. During the early 20th century he travelled extensively, painting life in South East Asia and the Middle East.

Bagdatopoulos, lived in London for a number of years (during the period this watercolour was produced), often working as a commercial artist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art during this time.

Having relocated to the United States during the 1920s and residing in California, during the later half of his career he worked predominantly in portraiture.

A number of works by W.S. Bagdatopoulos are included in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum
