Pastoe

Pastoe (or UMS Pastoe bv) is a Dutch furniture manufacturing company founded by Frits Loeb in 1913.

The company was established as Utrecht Mechanical and Furniture Factory (UMS) initially producing chairs to be sold in Loeb’s shop. As a fast growing business by 1918 they had moved to a large factory to enable them to supply a range of retailers with their furniture. Always innovative the company were adopted modernist designs prior to their popularity with the general public.

During the Second World War the factory was severely damaged and the contents plundered. In the years immediately after the war founder Loeb alongside his cousin Frits Ullman decided to take the company in a new direction. Renaming the business Pastoe they planned to flexible furniture systems utilising contemporary designs and technology.

Cees Braakman

Cees Braakman (1917-1995) was a Dutch furniture designer, known for his work as Chief Designer and Manager of Pastoe from 1948 – 1978.

Cees Braakman joined UMS Pastoe, aged 17 at which time his father Dirk was the Manager and Head Draughtsman.

In 1947 Cees Braakman was sent by Pastoe to the United States to observe post war design innovation. It was during this visit that Braakman became influenced by the work of Herman Miller and in particular that of Charles & Ray Eames. Upon his return to Holland, Braakman decided to adapt their techniques for Pastoe designs.

Using both steel wire and ply to produce chairs, he produced a wide range of furniture designs some of the most famous including: FT14 Armchair; Flamingo chair, FM06 Chair; SM05 Chair (part of the wire collection) and the Made-To-Measure storage furniture system for which he won a silver medal at the 1957 Milan Triennal.
