LONDON UNDERGROUND MAPS: A large original vintage 1929 London Underground station wall map.
This rare survivor features the London Underground logo to top centre margin and printers credit to lower margin “Edward Stanford Ltd, 12, 13 & 14 Long Acre, W.C.2”.
The map is in Quad Royal poster size 40 x 50 inches.

These station wall maps were design to orientate users with the geographical location of the central London Underground network. This 1929 version features a map of central London with the Underground lines (only a few of the lines which exist today were then present) super imposed on top.
This map offers a fascinating insight to London’s history. The border lists important London landmarks and historic places of interest. Many of the landmarks are some of the most iconic London locations. Although some of the attractions listed are no longer found in the capital including: The Ring (Boxing Arena lost during World War II), The India Museum (the collection now forms part of the V&A), The Geological Museum (here located on its original Jermyn Street site – now part of the Natural History Museum), The Royalty Theatre, Soho (which closed in 1938), The Metropolitan Music Hall, Edgware Road (which was demolished in the 1960s), The Alhambra, Leicester Square (demolished during the 1930s and replaced with the Odeon now on that site), The Tivoli (operating in 1929 as a cinema, it was demolished during the 1950s) and Tattersall’s Market, Knightsbridge (the famous race horse auctioneers – their last Knightsbridge Green auction was held in 1939. The company are now based in Newmarket and the London location demolished).
Edward Stanford (or Stanfords), established in 1853, are a famous London travel book and map producer.

Condition Report: Condition Report: Condition overall good and displays very well. Folded (usual practice at the time), some losses to edges and were folds meet, some taped repairs to reverse and poster. Some handling creases and surface dirt in accordance with age and use
