London Blackfriars as a station name came into existence in 1937, when the name of St. Pauls station was changed to avoid confusion with the newly renamed London Underground station.

This sign is a Southern Railway sign and colour-way indicating that the sign was produced between the time of the name change and the station becoming part of British Rail in 1948. Due to the scarcity of metal during World War II it is likely that this sign was manufactured between 1937 – 9. Mead McLean produced many rail signs during this period and were known for their enamelling process.
