MID 20^th CENTURY FURNITURE: A vintage John Piper ‘London Skyline’ coffee table.

The table has a Formica top decorated with iconic London landmarks. Manufactured circa 1960s. With two-tiers, the base with black painted wooden shelf and metal legs.

Dimensions length 114cm x depth 38cm x height 35.5cm (45 x 15 x 14 inches)

Condition report: The table is overall in good order. The feet covers to the back two legs are lacking. Some surface wear and loss of paint surface to edges. Some fading and light surface scratches.

The History

This ‘John Piper – London Skyline’ coffee table is believed to have been produced by furniture manufacturer Myer.

These tables are often credited as having been designed by Terence Conran and retailed via Habitat, during the 1960s. The artwork is also frequently attributed to artist John Piper. The design depicts famous London landmarks including; St. Pauls Cathedral and St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

The Artist

John Piper (1903 – 1992) was one of the most influential British artists, designers and printmakers of the 20^th century.

Piper’s work often depicts the British landscape and in particular its churches and monuments. He studied at Richmond School of Art and later the Royal College of Art. During the Second World War, he was an official War Artist – his work depicting the ruins of Coventry Cathedral are amongst his most famous.

By the later part of his career Piper produced artwork and designs for a range of different types of media; stained glass, ceramics, textiles and dust-jackets all being examples.
