John Heseltine (British, 1923-2016) ‘Her Own Special Island’
A painting in oil on board – We believe this is an original book illustration / commercial painting. Circa 1970s, signed lower left.
We estimate the painting would have been undertaken for a book cover/ magazine article.
The image features a central male and female figure in a bar with a further male figure in military dress.
Framed, glazed and mounted, bearing label verso inscribed ‘Part 3 Serial – Her Own Special Island’ (presumed removed from the reverse of work itself).
Dimensions: The frame overall 59cm high x 52cm wide, visible area within mount 42.5cm high x 35.5cm wide
John Heseltine (1923 – 2016) was a prolific British illustrator known particularly for his work for book and magazine publications. He obtained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1942, and served for four years in the Royal Navy during the 1940s. Having worked as an Art Editor for Norman Kark Publications, Heseltine began his career as a freelance artist in 1949.
We believe this work was likely undertaken for the Norah Lofts (1904-1983) adventure/ romance novel ‘Her Own Special Island’ released in 1973. Both Heseltine and Lofts produced work for John Bull magazine during their careers.
