Eric Ravilious (1903-1942): A Wedgwood Coronation Mug, commemorating the Coronation of HRH Queen Elizabeth II , featuring Eric Ravilious design.

The decoration transfer printed on glazed earthenware, washed with pink, the design in black and yellow on white ground with ‘1953’ and Royal Arms amongst fireworks. Additional printed “ERII” and crown to interior. The base stamped “To Commemorate The Coronation Of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1953, Wedgwood, Made in England, From The Design By Eric Ravilious”, and numbered CL0485.V.

The design for this rare coronation mug, was taken from Eric Ravilious’s original design for the expected coronation of Edward VIII in 1937 and adapted for the coronation of King George VI. The design was then adapted again for the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The original designs are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection (museum number E292.1937).

The Coronation mug was Ravilious’s first commission for the Wedgwood, for whom he went on to produce several designs. Many of his designs were not manufactured by Wedgwood until the 1950s. Ravilious lost his life in 1942 during a wartime RAF rescue mission.

Eric Ravilious said of his designs produced for Wedgwood, now considered classics: “I am sorry to say the [Wedgwood] family think my beautiful designs above the heads of their public and that to begin with, something should be done safer and more understandable.”
