Barnett Freedman (1901-1958) was a British artist known particularly for his work as a designer and illustrator.
His work as a lithographer is widely recognised. In particular those designed for Shell Oil, Guinness Breweries, London Underground and Lyons Tea Shops. He is also known for the art produced for the Ministry of Information during the Second World War. Freedman created several important book-jackets including; ‘Memoirs of an Infantry Officer’ by Siegfried Sassoon; ‘Dance of the Quick & the Dead’ by Sacheverell Sitwell and an edition of volumes by Leo Tolstoy. Freedman’s most famous work is perhaps the design he produced for Commemorative HM King George V Silver Jubilee postage stamp (otherwise known as ‘The King’s Stamp’).
Freedman was born in the East End of London, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. His frequent bouts of ill health as a child, resulted in his only receiving an education to Elementary School level. However, whilst hospitalised he learned (largely teaching himself) to read and write, draw and paint as well as play the violin.
During the early part of his career, Freedman worked as draughtsman and apprenticed for a firm of architects. He began taking night classes at St Martin’s School of Art. William Rothenstein, the celebrated artist and Principal of the Royal College of Art helped Freedman secure at place at the institution. He was a pupil from 1922 to 1925, his contemporaries included Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious. The drawing included here was executed in 1925, the final year Freeman was a student at the Royal College of Art.
In the later part of his career Freeman taught at both the Royal College of Art and the Ruskin School of Art.
