The painting is signed ‘A. L. Riviere’ lower right (visible to spine of book). Within ornate gilt frame.

Condition report: Overall condition very good – the work is an oil on canvas and therefore unglazed, the work has been restored, relined and reframed in recent years therefore canvas appears in good, restored condition (see images).
The Artist
Annette Louise Riviere (1837-1887) was a British artist active in the mid to late 19th century.
Riviere, was from an artistic family – here grandfather was miniaturist Daniel Valentine Riviere (1780-1854). Her father was noted portrait and historical painter William Riviere (1806-1876). Her mother Ann Riviere (nee Jarvis) was a still life painter. Whilst her younger brother Briton Riviere (1840-1920), was a Royal Academician well respected for his portraits and paintings of animal subjects.
Little information is available regarding A.L. Riviere and her career, she lived in London during the late 19th century.
