The work is in gouache, ink and applied gold leaf on paper, surrounded by script, the reverse leaf with four columns of script.

This illustrated folio is from Firdausi’s Shahnama or Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) the national epic of Greater Iran. The work was composed by the poet Firdausi (also spelled Ferdowsi) between c. 977 and 1010, the text is of huge importance in Persian language and culture. Containing over 50,000 couplets Shahnama is one of the world’s longest epic poems.
In the scene depicted here legendary hero Rustam or Rostam captures the horse Rakhsh.

Condition Report: In overall good condition, some loss to edges, creasing to page, applied to display board on top edge. There appears to be a small repair to top right edge. Displays excellently.
