Jean Derval (1925 – 2010) was a French artist known particularly for his influential work as a ceramicist.
Derval initially trained as a poster artist and Graphic Designer at the School of Applied Art in Paris. We believe this Jean Derval Prison Visit illustration was produced during this period.
In 1945, he decided to move away from graphic art, choosing instead to work as a ceramic artist. These pieces he would become highly collectable and those Derval is most recognised for.
His career developed during the mid 20th century. By the early 1950s Derval had his own studio and was producing unusual and unique ceramic work. His ceramic art was highly prized – receiving an award from the Cannes International Academy of Ceramics in 1955. Derval’s work is sometimes associated with that of his contemporaries including Roger Capron, Robert Picault and Pablo Picasso,
By the 1960s Derval’s work had become highly sculptural, reflecting cubist influences.
