William Townsend (1909 – 1973): An original illustration artwork, possibly for a book produced circa 1930s. The design is in watercolour and ink on paper. The painting depicts two ladies promenading on a seafront with a pier to the background (possibly Brighton West Pier).

William Townsend (1909 – 1973) was a British painter and book illustrator known particularly for his landscape paintings. Having studied at Slade School of Art, he held his first show in Bloomsbury in 1932. William Townsend, illustrated a number of books during his career, including The Untidy Gnome by Stella Gibbons and Moonshine and Magic by Alison Uttley. Townsend spent the latter part of his life in Canada. The Tate held a retrospective of the artists work during the mid 1970s.
