An original landscape – watercolour and pencil on paper. Circa 1930s.

The painting is signed by the artist to lower right and inscribed with the title ‘Seaton Sluice’. Bearing later artists estate/ studio stamp to reverse ‘Russell Sidney Reeve RE RBA 1895-1970’.

Condition report: Good condition overall – would benefit from framing – some surface dirt and minor foxing, top left corner with looseness, top right corner creased, edges slightly ragged and with some tape marks visible. Some tearing – see images.

Seaton Sluice, Northumberland is a village between Whitley Bay and Blyth. It is in close proximity to local landmarks of Seaton Delaval Hall and St. May’s Lighthouse.

The Artist 

Russell Sidney Reeve (1895-1970) was a British artist who trained at the Slade School or Art. He is known particularly his drawings and paintings of animals.

During the First World War, Reeve served as a Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers. His skill as a draughtsman was spotted by William Rothenstein – later the Principal of the Royal College of Art. It was due to this connection that Russell Reeve studied at both Slade and the Royal College of Art.
