Attributed to Eileen Evans (1921-2006) and Reginald Mount (1906-1979) as The Mount/ Evans Design Studio – An original lion and unicorn illustration artwork for an unknown production, c. 1950s.
The cartoon illustration depicts a lion and unicorn drinking from straws from a shared cup. The painting is in gouache on paper mounted to artists board with tracing paper overlay.
Dimensions: The artists board overall approximately 32cm high x 34.5cm wide, illustrated area approximately 13.5cm high x 17.5cm wide.
Condition report: Lion and Unicorn illustration – Overall condition very good – minor paper discolouration and marks, some rounding to board corners. Some marks to reverse, tracing paper with creases. Displays very well.
Reginald Mount OBE (1906 – 1979) was a British artist and graphic designer know particularly for his poster designs. During the Second World War he worked for the Ministry for Information producing propaganda and public safety posters. Mount first began working here with Eileen Evans, who would become his long-term collaborator.
Eileen Evans (1921-2006) was a British artist and graphic designer who began her career in the Ministry of Information designing public information and propaganda posters during the Second World War. It was here that she began her collaboration with Reginald Mount.
Mount and Evans formed their business the Mount/ Evans Studio during the 1950s. The studios output included posters, album cover art and promotional material of all types. The Keep Britain Tidy illustrations from this period are perhaps some of their most recognisable. They additionally produced work for the Department of Health and the British Army. Reginald Mount and Eileen Evans pieces do not often appear on the open market – the original artwork produced by Mount for the iconic movie poster for The Ladykillers sold at auction in 2019 for a hammer price of £12,000.
